The Technical SEO Checklist Every B2B Site Should Run Through in 2026

Technical SEO isn't glamorous. It doesn't generate the kind of excitement that a viral piece of content does. But it's the foundation everything else sits on — and when it's broken, nothing else you do will work as well as it should.

Here's the core checklist we work through for every client site.

1. Core Web Vitals

Google's Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, and CLS) are direct ranking signals. More importantly, they're proxies for user experience — a slow, janky site loses visitors before they even see your value proposition.

What to check:
  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): Should be under 2.5 seconds
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): Under 200ms
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): Under 0.1
Use Google's PageSpeed Insights and Chrome User Experience Report for real-world data.

2. Crawlability and Indexation

If Google can't crawl your site efficiently, it can't rank your pages.

What to check:
  • robots.txt isn't accidentally blocking important content
  • XML sitemap is present, accurate, and submitted in Google Search Console
  • No excessive redirect chains (3+ hops)
  • No orphaned pages (important pages with zero internal links)
  • Canonical tags are correctly implemented — especially on faceted navigation and paginated content

3. HTTPS and Security

This is baseline. If you're still on HTTP, you're losing rankings and trust signals simultaneously.

4. Mobile Friendliness

Google indexes mobile-first. If your site looks broken or loads slowly on mobile, your desktop rankings suffer.

What to check:
  • Google's Mobile-Friendly Test
  • No content wider than the viewport
  • Tap targets at least 48x48px
  • Fonts at least 16px for body copy

5. Structured Data

Schema markup helps search engines understand your content. For B2B service businesses, the most important schemas are:

  • Organization — establishes your brand entity
  • LocalBusiness — if you serve a geographic area
  • FAQPage — for FAQ sections (also AI search friendly)
  • Service — for individual service pages
  • Article — for blog posts

6. Internal Linking Structure

Your internal links tell search engines which pages are important. They also pass authority throughout your site.

What to check:
  • Your most important pages have the most internal links pointing to them
  • Navigation is crawlable (avoid JavaScript-only nav menus)
  • Anchor text is descriptive, not just "click here" or "learn more"

7. Page Speed Beyond Core Web Vitals

Even outside of Core Web Vitals scores, raw load time affects user behavior.

Quick wins:
  • Compress and convert images to WebP
  • Implement lazy loading for images below the fold
  • Minify CSS and JavaScript
  • Leverage browser caching
  • Use a CDN

8. Duplicate Content

Duplicate content confuses crawlers and dilutes your ranking signals. Common culprits:

  • www vs. non-www versions of your domain
  • HTTP vs. HTTPS
  • Trailing slash inconsistency
  • Printer-friendly pages
  • Parameter-based URL variations

9. Broken Links and 404 Errors

Every broken internal link is a dead end for crawlers. Every broken external link is a trust signal problem.

Use Screaming Frog or Ahrefs Site Audit to find and fix broken links systematically.

10. Page Titles and Meta Descriptions

Still foundational. Every page needs a unique, keyword-informed title tag (under 60 characters) and a compelling meta description (under 160 characters).

Running through this checklist will surface issues most B2B sites don't know they have. If you'd rather have us run it for you, alongside a read on how AI search currently sees your firm, start with an AI Visibility Report.
